Trying new colors at Christmas is one of my favorite things to do – and something that’s easy for me because I have multiple Christmas trees.
My goal is to have at least a couple trees that match the rooms they’re in.
The tree at right is located in my guest room, where traditional red and green would not look good.
Instead, I decided to go with a small white tree – which is a fantastic way to showcase a special color – and then spent a few months collecting inexpensive ornaments in blues and aqua, with just a touch of pink.
The result is striking and fun.
It’s one of my favorite trees in the house.
Note, though, that I said trees – plural. This is not my main Christmas tree, which is primarily red and green and packed fun of more traditional ornaments, including ones I’ve been collecting since I was a kid.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t try an unusual color scheme in your main living space. Just use the colors in your room as your guide. Check out the beautiful fuchsia and white color scheme in this living room from Better Homes and Gardens.
What’s great is that it all feels so unified – even though the room is decorated for the holidays.
Actually, I found lots of pink and purple examples of Christmas decorating. Below left is a simple tree with purple ornaments. Below right is a much more vibrant and colorful tree in a room with pink walls. Note that in both cases, the tree is white.
Blue makes a great Christmas decorating color.
In the rooms below – at left from Cottage Homes and at right from BHG – blue doesn’t feel at all like unusual holiday color.
I recently switched the tree on my enclosed porch to purples and pinks for two reasons – it matches my recent décor in the room and because my 4-year-old nieces were helping me decorate it and those are their favorite colors.
Previously, though, I used a copper, brown and green color scheme on the tree. I loved it so much I’ve kept the ornaments, even though I have no place for that palette in my home now.
At right is a peak at what that tree looked like.
So this year, try a new color scheme – or start planning now to try one next year.
Check out what’s available in the Christmas décor aisles, pick and color and slowly start buying. Look for ornaments that make a big impact with little money – think size and sparkle. And don’t forget to check the after-Christmas sales for good deals on your new color scheme!
