I think one of the great lighting inventions of the last few years is the ability for a homeowner to turn a canned light into a pendant or chandelier with a do-it-yourself kit.
Don’t get me wrong. I love canned lights. And because we live in an old house, we had to choose to have them installed. But they are in addition to other kinds of lighting, including some chandeliers, sconces and track lighting.
In so many brand new houses, though, canned lights make up the bulk of the available light, which is why it’s so fantastic that you can easily switch them out for something new.
You can visit The Can Converter to buy the hardware to turn a recessed light into pendants, track lighting, ceiling fans and other decorative lighting.
But you can also buy kits that come with the new lights, like the Drum Pendant Shade with Adapter above from Ballard Designs. It costs $79 to $119, depending on the size and shade fabric you choose.
You can also find some great options at Lowes, including the Portfolio Recessed Light to Pendant Light Conversion Kit. It’s $48. You can see in the sequence below how the conversion works.
Home Depot has a line of conversion lights it calls “instant pendants” and offers some really stylish shades and colors. They range from about $39 to $55. You can see three of the options below:
It wasn’t surprising at all to me that the Improvements catalog – which is full of things to make your house operate like you want – has its own conversion light.
“Create a beautiful designer look in minutes with no rewiring, no special tools -- our recessed light conversion kit includes all you need,” the Improvements catalog says. “Simply unscrew your old light bulb and screw in the instant pendant lighting socket adapter. The built-in spindle lets you adjust the cord length of the instant pendant light from 8" to 48".”
Improvements also sells two other styles of lights.
You could use these lights above an island, in an entryway or hanging over a bedside table – anyplace you have a recessed light just waiting for a conversion!
