My husband is a hobby woodworker so our garage (really it's more of a shop - there are never any cars in it) is full of the kinds of fancy tools you can use to build amazing furniture. Well, I couldn't use them for that, but he can.
Most homeowners, though, just have the basics -- hammers, screw drivers, a drill and maybe a jig saw or circular saw. If you've got those items in your toolbox, you can build some fantastic modern furniture for your home, all thanks to detailed directions from the Plan Canvas shop on Etsy.
Plan Canvas -- which also offers downloadable options here -- grew out of owner Christian Schoeneman's desire to make low cost furniture for his own home. He furnished his entire living and dining room in handmade furniture for less than $200. Now, Plan Canvas helps others do the same.
"We are driven to design furniture plans for you to build at low cost," Christian says at the Etsy site. "All of our furniture plans are very detailed so that anyone can build their own furniture. Most of our furniture plans can be built with a jigsaw or circular saw within a few hours."
There are lots of great plan choices, although all have a modern or mid-century feel. The styles lend themselves to simple, plywood construction.
