I was immediately drawn to this week's Etsy pick -- Gomez Whitney -- for the shop's sleek, contemporary shelving. It's a perfect look for any modern home.
The shop's woodworker, Jonathan, designs and builds retail stores but is now creating what he calls "domestic" designs as well. I think they look fantastic.
He said he thinks of making shelves as "making places."
"They become ways to surround ourselves with the 'things we like,'" Jonathan writes on his Etsy page.
"That can be made to sound like a shallow materialism but the things I like are the things I use. They are the objects that I touch and work with. They are the things that help me deal with a material world," he said. "When I set them on a beautiful piece of wood I can stand back and see my life."
What's great is that Jonathan will make just about any shelf you want -- a box, a bench, a ledge.
The shelves above are small Veronica shelves, which are three inches thick, four inches deep and 48 inches long. They sell for $60 each. But you can ask Jonathan to make them in just about any dimension you like (although he points out that 60 inches is the break point for a "little price jump").
Below, you'll find some of Jonathan's other options:
Above left - Set of three boxes, $75. Above right - Customized shelf. Customization begins at $50.
Below left - Bicycle hanger, $69. Below right - Cruising shelves in spring green, $65.
